The Deadline for Florida’s DLM Code is Approaching

Florida has adopted a critical safety requirement for all elevators to increase the safe operation of elevator equipment. By December 31, 2023, all Florida elevators must be equipped with a Door Lock Monitoring (DLM) system which keeps elevators locked in place until the doors are completely closed.

Why do I need Door Lock Monitoring?

Florida’s new code is retroactive to ALL elevators

Florida has adopted a critical safety requirement for all elevators to increase the safe operation of elevator equipment. By December 31, 2023, all Florida elevators must be equipped with a Door Lock Monitoring (DLM) system which keeps elevators locked in place until the doors are completely closed.

A17.3-2015 is a RETROACTIVE code. This means all elevators within the State of Florida must meet this code.

Failure to comply with this code requirement by 2023, may result in failed inspections, certificates not being renewed, costly fines, and possible shutdowns of your equipment by the AHJ.

How this applies to your elevators

Elevators manufactured after 2000 may already have DLM systems. However, these systems may to be activated via software update or an alteration in wiring. The most reliable method to meet the new requirements is to install a devices that provide the DLM functionality.

Elevators manufactured prior to 2000 will most likely require upgraded equipment or full modernization. However, full modernization is a major financial investment. Our DLM unit can provide the full DLM functionality without the need for a full modernization and extend the life of your current system.

Our Door Lock Monitoring System is designed to work with any controller, regardless of the voltage or the logic of signals. Fully code compliant. Our expert engineer team will prepare the old print and show detailed, code compliant modifications on it. Not complying with the required DLM mandate can result in loss of service, as well as expensive fines, canceled insurance coverage, legal liabilities and massive inconveniences to tenants, guests and employees.

Regardless of whether you are targeting the upcoming 2023 compliance deadline, or being proactive and considering future modernizations, you should move quickly and consult SEI Elevators on how best to address the situation. It can take up to six weeks just to obtain the necessary permits to proceed. Waiting much longer could risk failure to meet the compliance deadline, resulting in fines and potential exposure to additional liabilities.

With over 80,000 elevators in Florida scheduling your installation early is vital. Building owners need to take steps now to evaluate their systems and ensure they are in compliance. As the deadline approaches, supply chain issues and increased demand will only increase wait time and cost for upgrades.

Avoid the cost of a full modernization with SEI Elevator’s Door Lock Monitoring add-on system.  Our systems will bring you fully into compliance with the new code without requiring installation of air-conditioning in your machine room. Installation is often completed in one to two days.

Due to demand and manufacturing it is vital to lock in your price today.
